In the latest shift in the movie industry, Pixar’s Soul is bypassing theaters and headed to Disney+.
Soul was set to release on November 20 in theaters and will now arrive on Disney+ Christmas Day, December 25. This release strategy applies to countries with Disney+, some international markets will still have a theatrical release. Soul will not have an additional “premiere access” like Mulan and will simply be available to everyone who subscribes to the service.
This shift in strategy points to the possibility that maybe Mulan’s $30 extra charge was not as successful as Disney wanted or they see not charging anything extra as a better way to entice new subscribers. The Christmas Day release is perfect for families, the core target for Disney+. With the return of The Mandalorian for Season 2 and WandaVision planned to arrive before the year is up, it seems Disney+ is poised to end 2020 on a strong note.
