Sports often serve as a bonding tool between parents and children. First Match releasing on Netflix later this month finds a teenage girl using wrestling to connect with her estranged father.
Starring Elvire Emanuelle, First Match started as a short film before expanding and finding its way to Netflix. Girls competing against boys in sports or looking for approval from their fathers aren’t new concepts, but the trailer hints at more.
The father played by Yahya Abul-Mateen II looks to bring his daughter into a dangerous world of underground fighting. I first saw Yahya in The Get Down on Netflix, where he immediately stood out as Cadillac. It’s good to see him getting more roles and this looks like it could be a very interesting one for him.
