Netflix Delivers Blow To Harlem’s Hero With Cancellation Of Luke Cage

Sweet Christmas! First it was the cancellation of Iron Fist and now Netflix has announced Luke Cage will not be returning for a third season.

The news is even more shocking than Iron Fist not returning, as a Season 3 announcement for Luke Cage appeared imminent. Scripts has already been ordered and a writer’s room had been working for months on a new season.  Marvel and Netflix released a statement below on Luke Cage‘s end.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

Money issues and creative differences have been cited as the chief culprits on the two sides not being able to make a deal. While Netflix does not release ratings, the first season of Luke Cage achieved tremendous viewing and Season 2 is speculated to have done very well also.

Much like Iron Fist, Luke Cage wrapped Season 2 on a very intriguing direction for future story-lines.  I enjoyed the past season a lot and was looking forward to what Season 3 could bring.  Although there are no plans for Luke Cage or Iron Fist to migrate over to Disney’s upcoming streaming service, I wouldn’t completely rule anything out.

Perhaps once Disney gains a controlling stake in Hulu, the company could shift the more adult series over to that platform instead of its more family-focused streaming service. Punisher is set to return for its second season next year and Jessica Jones has already been green-lit for a third season.  It will be really interesting to see how much of an extended future they, along with Daredevil have going forward on Netflix.
